What the Plates Actually Do

The electrolysis chamber is the heart of any water ionizer. Inside it, platinum-coated titanium plates are arranged in alternating positive (anode) and negative (cathode) configuration. When electrical current passes through water flowing between these plates, the water is split: the cathode side produces alkaline water with elevated pH, negative ORP, and dissolved H₂; the anode side produces acidic water (useful for cleaning and skincare).

More plates means more total electrode surface area. More surface area means more water molecules can be ionized simultaneously, producing stronger and more consistent electrolysis at any given flow rate.

The progression is clear. At every level, more plates produce higher pH, more negative ORP, and higher H₂ concentration. The gains are most pronounced when comparing the 9-plate to the 13-plate at Level 4: a 0.21 pH increase, a 97 mV ORP improvement, and a 0.47 ppm increase in dissolved hydrogen.

But More Plates Is Not Always More

The plate count tells you the potential of a unit — not the actual output. Several other factors determine real-world performance:

1. Plate Quality and Platinum Coating

The platinum coating on titanium plates is what enables efficient, stable electrolysis. Lower-quality coatings deteriorate faster, reducing ionization effectiveness over time. Does a higher plate count mean a better water ionizer?

More plates generally means more electrolysis surface area and stronger ionization at any given flow rate. What is the difference between solid plates and mesh plates?

Mesh or perforated plates allow water to flow through the plate surface rather than just past it, increasing the effective contact area between the water and the platinum surface. Do more plates use more electricity?
